Southern fried horror, yeehah!

The Elementals by Michael McDowell

Probably the best horror book I've read that isn't by Stephen King... A Southern lady dies and some of the family moves into three sets of houses called Bedlame in Mobile, Alabama. But the third house is uninhabited, full of sand and inexplicable spirits dubbed 'elementals' conspiring to take over the other houses and kill the inhabitants. Kinda slow cooking (so to speak) but worth it for the terrifying conclusion.
